Somerset Art Works announces commissioned artist for Langport Interchange Art Project

Somerset Art Works is delighted to announce that Somerset-based artist Alice Cunningham has been appointed to create a new public artwork as part of the Langport Transport Interchange redevelopment.

Commissioned in partnership with Somerset Council and Langport Town Council, the Langport Interchange Art Project forms part of wider improvements to Langport’s town centre. The commission will create a permanent sculptural wall relief celebrating the town’s landscape, heritage and community, creating a welcoming gateway to the new Transport Hub.

Beccy Swaine, Engagement Director at Somerset Art Works, said:

“The commissioning panel was particularly impressed by Alice’s proposal to explore Langport’s distinctive landscape and identity, alongside her thoughtful, site-responsive approach to public art. Bringing extensive experience of creating sculpture through research and collaboration with communities, her practice explores the relationship between geology, ecology and people, creating artworks that respond to landscape, history and community narratives.”

At the heart of the commission is an ambitious programme of 18 creative workshops with local residents, schools and community groups. Through these sessions, Alice will gather stories, ideas and inspiration from people of all ages, while participants will also have opportunities to create elements for the final artwork. Together, these contributions will help shape a permanent artwork that reflects Langport’s unique identity, fostering a lasting sense of ownership and pride in the renewed public space.

The first opportunity to meet Alice and find out more about the project will be at the Free Summer PlayDay on Thursday 13 August, 11am–3pm, at Cocklemoor, Langport. Families and visitors are invited to take part in creative activities, discover more about the commission and share their ideas as the project begins.

“I’m delighted to be creating this new public artwork for Langport. What excites me most about the project is the opportunity to work with the community to uncover and celebrate the stories already woven into this remarkable landscape. My approach is always rooted in research, making and collaboration, so through workshops, conversations and time spent on site, the final sculpture will be shaped by both the place and the people who know it best. I hope the finished work will create a sense of welcome while encouraging people to pause, look closely and discover something new about Langport every time they pass.”

Mark Stanistreet, Somerset Council, said:

“Following the community engagement programme, artwork designs will be developed during late 2026 before fabrication and installation take place in spring 2027. The completed artwork will become a permanent feature of the new Rural Transport Hub, celebrating Langport’s distinctive identity and creating a welcoming gateway shaped by the stories and creativity of its community.”

The Langport Interchange Art Project is a partnership between Somerset Art Works, Somerset Council and Langport Town Council. The project is supported through the Department for Transport’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) funding, alongside support from Arts Council England.
