We launched the Langport Interchange Art Project at the Summer PlayDay on Cocklemoor, meeting local residents of all ages, families and visitors, and began the conversations that will help shape Alice Cunningham’s new public artwork.
We asked one simple question: What do you love about Langport?
The answers came through in words, drawings and conversations – from peace and tranquillity, the river, walks and paddleboarding, to nature and wildlife, the library, community garden, local groups, friends and neighbours, artisan makers, food and cafés.
There was a strong sense of connection to both place and community, and lots to celebrate.
We invited people to contribute through conversation, words and drawings on giant sheets of paper which acted as huge brain storms. Alice also introduced some of the protected species found locally, with cranes, badgers, bats and birds brought to life through painted cardboard cut-outs.
Reflecting on the first workshop, Alice said:
“The workshop felt like a really positive start to the project. People were enthusiastic about sharing what matters to them and responded positively to the idea of new public art in Langport. Future workshops will build on this by creating more opportunities for focused discussion and creative activities, particularly with schools and community groups.”
And this is just the beginning.
Over the coming months Alice will be delivering a programme of creative workshops to gather ideas and inspiration for the permanent wall relief sculpture for the Langport Interchange Art Project.
Creativity brings people together — and sometimes, a simple question is a good place to start.
